Mie University History

  1. 31st May, 1949
    Mie University is founded. It is comprised of the Faculty of Liberal Arts (Training Course for Primary School Teachers, Training Course for Junior High School Teachers), and the Faculty of Agriculture (Department of Agriculture, Department of Civil Agriculture, Department of Forestry, Department of Agricultural and Industrial Production).
    University facilities include the University Library, a Senior High School, Junior High School, Primary School, and Kindergarten associated with the Faculty of Liberal Arts, and an experimental farm and forest associated with the Faculty of Agriculture. Mie University’s predecessor schools were the Mie Normal School, Mie Normal School for Youth School Teachers, and the Mie Higher Agricultural and Forestry College.

    Mie Normal School, Mie Normal School for Youth School Teachers and Mie Higher Agricultural and Forestry College are closed.
  3. 1st April, 1951
    The Special Agricultural Course is established.
  4. 31st March, 1953
    The attached Senior High School is closed.
  5. 1st April, 1953
    The Faculty of Agriculture’s Department of Agriculture and Industrial Production is reorganized to become the Department of Agricultural Chemistry. The Department of General Agriculture is established.
  6. 1st July, 1955
    The Faculty of Agriculture’s one-year Agriculture Graduate Course is established.
  7. 1st April, 1963
    The attached Junior High Schools and Primary Schools in Tsu and Kameyama are amalgamated in Tsu.
  8. 1st April, 1964
    The Faculty of Agriculture’s Department of Agricultural Machinery is established, and the Department of General Agriculture is closed.
  9. 1st April, 1965
    The Faculty of Agriculture’ course system is adopted.
  10. 31st March, 1966
    The Faculty of Agriculture’s one-year Agriculture Graduate Course is discontinued.
  11. 1st April, 1966
    The Graduate School of Agriculture’s Master’s Course is established.
    The Faculty of Liberal Arts is renamed the Faculty of Education.
    The Faculty of Education’s Training Course for Handicapped Children’s School Teachers and one-year Education Graduate Course are established.
  12. 1st April, 1967
    The Faculty of Education’s Training Course for Kindergarten Teachers is established.
  13. 1st April, 1969
    The Faculty of Education moves to it’s current location in Kamihama.
    The Faculty of Engineering, comprising the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Department of Electrical Engineering, is established.
  14. 1st April, 1970
    The Faculty of Engineering’s Department of Industrial Chemistry is established.
    The Experimental Farm moves to it’s current location in Takanō.
  15. 1st May, 1972
    The Faculty of Medicine (comprising the School of Medicine) and the Faculty of Fisheries (comprising the Department of Fisheries) are established (transferred to Mie University from Mie Prefectural University).
  16. 1st April, 1973
    The Faculty of Education’s School for the Mentally Handicapped is established.
    The Executive Office of the General Affairs Department, the Accounting Department, and the Facilities Department are reorganized.
  17. 1st October, 1973
    The University Hospital is established (transferred from the Mie Prefectural University). The Faculty of Medicine’s Administration Department is established.
  18. 1st April, 1974
    The Faculty of Medicine’s School of Nursing is established.
    The Faculty of Engineering’s Department of Machinery for Materials is established.
  19. 11th April, 1974
    The Student Health Center established.
    The Faculty of Fisheries’ Fisheries Research Laboratory is established.
  20. 1st April, 1975
    The Graduate School of Medicine’s Doctoral Course is established.
    The Faculty of Engineering’s Department of Electronic Engineering is established.
  21. 1st April, 1976
    The Graduate School of Fisheries’ Master’s Course is established.
    The Faculty of Engineering’s Department of Resources Chemistry is established.
  22. 18th April, 1977
    The Faculty of Education’s Education Technology Center is established.
  23. 1st April, 1978
    The Graduate School of Engineering’s Master’s Course is established.
  24. 1st April, 1979
    The Faculty of Medicine’s Institute of Laboratory Animals is established.
    The Faculty of Fisheries’ Training Ship Seisui Maru is purchased.
    The Special Education one-year Graduate Course is established.
  25. 1st April, 1980
    The Faculty of Engineering’s Department of Architecture is established.
    The Administration Department of the University Hospital is reorganized.
  26. 1st April, 1982
    The Construction Department is reorganized.
  27. 1st April, 1983
    The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, comprising the Department of Humanities and the Department of Social Sciences, is established.
    The position of Director of General Education is created.
  28. 21st May, 1987
    The Faculty of Education’s Education Technology Center is reorganized to form the Center for Educational Research and Practice.
    The Administration Departments of the Faculty of Medicine and the University Hospital are merged.
  29. 1st October, 1987
    The Faculty of Agriculture and Faculty of Fisheries are combined and reorganized to establish the Faculty of Bioresources, comprising the Institute of Bioresources.
    The Experimental Farm, Experimental Forest, Training Ship Seisui Maru, and Fisheries Research Laboratory become part of the Faculty of Bioresources.
  30. 1st April, 1988
    The Graduate School of Bioresources’s Master’s Course is established.
  31. 1st October, 1988
    The College of Medical Sciences is established as an annex.
  32. 31st March, 1989
    The Graduate School of Fisheries is closed.
    The Special Education one-year Graduate Course is discontinued.
  33. 1st April, 1989
    The Graduate School of Education’s Master’s Course is established.
    The Faculty of Engineering’s Department of Information Engineering is established.
  34. 29th May, 1989
    The Administration Department of the University Library is reorganized.
  35. 30th September, 1989
    The Graduate School of Agriculture’s Post-Graduate course is discontinued.
  36. 1st April, 1990
    The Faculty of Education’s Course for Information Science Education is established.
    The Faculty of Engineering’s Departments of Industrial Chemistry and Resources Chemistry are reorganized and combined to form the Department of Chemistry for Materials.
  37. 8th June, 1990
    The Regional Cooperative Research Center and the Center for Molecular Biology and Genetics are established.
  38. 31st March, 1991
    The Faculty of Medicine’s School of Nursing is closed.
  39. 1st April, 1991
    The Faculty of Engineering’s Department of Mechanical Engineering and Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering are combined and reorganized to form the Department of Mechanical Engineering. Also, the Department of Electrical Engineering and Department of Electronic Engineering are combined and reorganized to form the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering.
    The Graduate School of Bioresources’ Doctoral Course is established.

    The Faculty of Fisheries is closed.
  41. 1st April, 1992
    The Graduate School of Humanities and Social Sciences’ Master’s Course is established.
  42. 10th April, 1992
    The Instrumental Analysis Center is established.
  43. 31st March, 1993
    The Faculty of Agriculture is closed.
  44. 9th February, 1995
    Construction of the University Auditorium (Sansui Hall) is completed.
  45. 1st April, 1995
    The Graduate School of Engineering’s Doctoral Course is established.
  46. 1st April, 1997
    The Faculty of Education’s Training Courses for Primary School Teachers, Junior High School Teachers, Handicapped Children Schools, Kindergarten Teachers are combined and reorganized to form the Training Course for School Teachers, and the Training Course for Continued Education.
    The Faculty of Engineering’ Departments of Mechanical Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, and Information Engineering are reorganized. Also, the Department of Physics Engineering is established.
    The Center for International Students is established.
    The Administration Bureau and the Student Affairs Department are combined to form the Educational Affairs Department of the General Affairs Division.
    Mie University Vice-Presidental positions are created.
    The position of Director of General Education is discontinued.

    The Faculty of Medicine’s School of Nursing is established.
  48. 1st April, 1999
    The Faculty of Education’s Training Courses for School Teachers, Information Science Education, and Continued Education are reorganized to form the Course for Human Development Science.
    The Faculty of Education’s Center for Educational Research and Practice is reorganized and becomes the Integrated Center for Educational Research and Practice.
  49. 1st April, 2000
    The Faculty of Bioresources’ Institute of Bioresources is reorganized to form the Department of Sustainable Resource Science, the Department of Environmental Science and Technology, and the Department of Life Science.
  50. 20th September, 2000
    The Satellite Venture Business Laboratory is established.
  51. 1st April, 2001
    The Graduate School of Medicine’s Master’s course is established.
  52. 1st April, 2002
    The Faculty of Bioresources’ Farm Station, Forest Station, and Fishery Research Station are merged to form the Kii-Kuroshio Bio-regional Field Science Center.
    The Graduate School of Medicine is renamed (from 大学院医学研究科 to 大学院医学系研究科, English title remains the same).
  53. 1st April, 2003
    The Center for Molecular Biology and Genetics, the Instrumental Analysis Center, and the Institute of Laboratory Animals reorganized to form the Life Science Research Center.
    The Center for Information Technologies and Networks (CITN) is established.
    The Information Processing Center is closed.
    The Ultrastructural Research Center is closed.
  54. 1st April, 2004
    Mie University becomes a National University Corporation.
    The Regional Cooperative Research Center is reorganized to form the Research Center for Creation.
    The Campus Incubator established.
  55. 1st April, 2005
    The Higher Education Development Center (HEDC) is established.
  56. 1st October, 2005
    The Center for International Students is reorganized and becomes the Center for International Education and Research (CIER).
