Discovery of a new enzyme

3 Mar 2023

Summary of our research

The research group including Dr. Naoto Isono (Associate Professor, Graduate School of Bioresources, Mie University), Dr. Hirotaka Katsuzaki (Associate Professor, Graduate School of Bioresources, Mie University), and Wataru Saburi (Associate Professor, Research Faculty of Agriculture, Hokkaido University) discovered the enzyme "3-O-β-D-glucopyranosyl β-D-glucuronide phosphorylase", which has been as a novel enzyme by the International Union of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (IUBMB) and assigned a new EC number, "EC 2.4.1.392". The enzyme was discovered from the bacterium Paenibacillus borealis and is thought to be involved in the degradation of polysaccharides and glycosides, including an acidic sugar, "glucuronic acid."
